Q: What is the new UK ETA system and who does it affect from April 2025?

A: From 2 April, 2025, nationals from visa-exempt countries such as France, Belgium, and Switzerland must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the UK. This includes travellers who are simply transiting through a UK airport, even if they do not pass through border control or leave the international transit area.

Exemptions include UK and Irish citizens, holders of a valid UK visa and those with permanent or temporary UK residency status. The application process is fully digital and can be completed via the official UK government website or the UK ETA app.
